The Hon. Tim Holding - Minister for Tourism

Tim Holding represents the electorate of Lyndhurst and is currently Minister for Tourism and Minister for Information and Communication Technology, as well as Minister for Finance.

Mr Holding was Minister for Police & Emergency Services and Minister for Corrections, 2005-2006, Minister for Financial Services Industry and Minister for Manufacturing and Export, 2002- 2005.

Tim holds a law degree from Melbourne University and has a background in public policy. His previous roles include advising a Federal Minister for Defence and serving on local government.

Bruce Esplin - Emergency Services Commissioner

Research conducted here and overseas indicates that as a result of climate change, we will experience a greater number major fires more frequently. With this very prospect in mind, everything must be done to try to protect people, property and the environment.

Bruce Esplin as the Emergency Services Commissioner is well placed to explain how communities can prepare and respond to such emergency situations.

Bruce has had an impressive career spanning more than twenty years in the emergency management sector. He is a highly regarded speaker on public safety leadership, and the future direction of emergency management.

Daniel Gschwind - CEO, Queensland Tourism Industry Council

It is recognised by global leaders, that Climate Change is the most significant challenge facing humankind in the 21st century. Exactly how much of a challenge are we faced with and what will the costs be to the tourism industry and development into the future?

Daniel Gschwind, the CEO of the Queensland Tourism Industry Council (QTIC), knows all too well the effects on the natural wonders in his state of Queensland, having researched this issue in depth.

A leader in tourism, Daniel is on the board of Rainforest CRC, Australian Tourism Research Institute, Decipher Technologies and the Marine and Tropical Science Research Facility.

Lisa Patterson - Carbon Offser Manager, Intrepid Travel

The number one cause of Co2 emissions in the world is the tourism industry. In an effort to try to curb these effects,

Intrepid Travel has taken a leap of faith by including a Carbon Offset Payment for all flights as from January 1st this year.

As head of Intrepid’s Carbon Offsetting Program, Lisa has been working with Intrepid Travel for nearly five years in various roles. Initially as group leader in Indochina for two years and then relocating back to Melbourne to take up the role as Assistant Operations Manager.  She also sits on The Intrepid Foundation committee and has a lot of experience in animal conservation volunteer work in South East Asia.

 
 

Malcolm Auld - Pricipal, Malcolm Auld Direct (MAD)

Did you know that 88% of Australians receiving addressed direct mail actually read it? Just when you thought direct marketing was a little outworn, you might want to readdress that thought. Malcolm will explain why this form of the communication mix is making a renaissance and how you might be able use this to your advantage.

 

Malcolm is Principal of MAD and regarded as one of the direct marketing industry's pioneers, with 30 years experience. Malcolm's book Direct Marketing Made Easy is the largest selling marketing text in Australia, and his book E-mail Marketing Made Easy was the first non-American book on the subject. Malcolm is a major contributor to local marketing education programmes and he has been involved in numerous firsts, as the industry has developed locally.

Sara Jones - Marketing and Development Manager, Koorie Heritage Trust

Sara Jones is the Marketing & Development Manager at the award winning Koorie Heritage Trust in Melbourne.  Sara has been in this role for the past three years and has seen the Trust grow from a small community organisation to a Centre attracting close to 80,000 visitors per annum and successfully marketed overseas.

She is an elected member of BOAV’s Advisory Committee as well as being a member of Aboriginal Tourism – Victoria and of Tourism Alliance Victoria’s Attractions Group.

John Jacoby - John Jacoby, Course Designer and Race Director, Otway Odyssey

The Otway Odyssey mountain bike course is already infamous after racers competed in the inaugural competition last February. Arguably the most difficult course in Australia it is also the newest, which adventurer John Jacoby both designed and directed. Was it the recent course developments by DSE, which paved the way for such a race? How important is the planning and enhancement of natural assets in order develop them as long-term drawcards for adventure tourism?

John is one of the most experienced and accomplished adventure racers in the world. He was awarded the Keys to the City of Melbourne in 1987 after being crowned World Marathon Kayak Champion for the 3rd year in a row. He has completed in 30 major international adventure races in 16 countries.

Dr. James Bradfield-Moody - Director, Divisional Business Strategy CSIRO Division of Land and Water

Sustainable land and natural resource management is essential for the future development of the tourism industry. What can the industry do to help alleviate associated social and economic consequences? Having racked up a series of very impressive credentials in an amazingly short period of time, James Bradfield-Moody, currently the Director, Divisional Business Strategy at the CSIRO Division of Land and Water is well versed to answer this question.

James is passionate about the supporting role that young socially conscious businesspeople can play in society, and has been active in roles such as the Founding President of the International Young Professionals Foundation and Young Engineers Australia. James also appears regularly on the ABC Television show “The New Inventors” and is a member of the Federal Government’s National Environmental Education Council. He believes that sustainability and environmental management issues will become increasingly more important in our society.

John Anderson - Founder of Contiki Holidays

At the age of 22, John left New Zealand for Europe on a one-year overseas trip as droves of Australians and New Zealanders had done before him. He returned 20 years later with a wife, four children and the international tourism business - Contiki Holidays in tow.

With no other competitors in the market place to benchmark the cost of such a tour around Europe at the time, he calculated his first tour at £100 per person. This included costs for the van, petrol and food kitty. Through Contiki Holidays’ instinctive understanding of the market and its competitors, it has developed into an international brand name and one of the world's major tour operators.

Malcolm Weaver - Director, Business Development Network (BDN)

As a business owner, it is important to be aware of issues involved with attracting and retaining staff. Malcolm Weaver is director and co founder of (BDN) Business Development Network and currently working to deliver the My Business, My People program. This government funded initiative aims to help small and medium businesses avoid skill shortages and attract and retain the skilled workforce they want. Malcolm has worked as an accountant and business advisor for more than 25 years, and has extensive experience in providing practical advice to SMEs on management issues, financial management and business planning.

Barbara Moss - Festival Director, Queenscliff Music Festival Inc.

Queenscliff Music Festival is now in its 11th year and is officially recognised by Tourism Victoria as one of the few Regional Victorian Hallmark Events.

Barbara Moss, the festival director has been heavily involved in organising the festival for ten years. She wrote the submissions that saw the event take out the National Tourism Award for Most Significant Festival and Event, as well as securing Queenscliff a place in Tourism Victoria’s Hall of Fame. Barbara has an eclectic professional background including the performing arts; education; youth work; marketing and business management. This experience has honed her interest in industry development issues across a range of sectors including tourism, music and the arts, education as well as in community development. As someone who both lives and works in a regional tourist town, Barbara is committed to the ongoing health of responsible, sustainable tourism.

Ken Salisbury - Managing Director, Xpotential Australia Pty Ltd.

We all live in a world of unprecedented change. While we cannot do much to influence the pace, we can choose to respond positively to the changes around us and often learn to thrive on them. What are the drivers of change and how can we plan positively for change?

Ken Salisbury is the Managing Director of X Potential Australia Pty Ltd, a training and organisation development consulting business. Ken has a wealth of consulting experience with organisations both at home and abroad has made him one of the most engaging and compelling facilitators in the business. Ken has assisted a wide variety of Australian companies create changes and adjust to change in order to sustain themselves into the future. What can the tourism industry learn from Ken’s knowledge?
