Record Numbers for Visitor Information Centre Summit

More than 85 Visitor Information Centre (VIC) Managers and staff from across Victoria, gathered in Lorne for the 4th annual VIC Summit, August 4th & 5th 2004

This was the highest attendance ever for a Visitor Information Centre Summit with a significant quantity of delegates attending the Summit for the first time.

The Summit is an opportunity for VIC managers and staff to gain valuable and relevant information specifically applicable to their working environment. It also provides an arena for delegates to network with those in similar working roles, exchange ideas on work practices and experiences they have had within their own VIC.

This year's summit focused on issues such as:

  • Meeting customer service needs for the hearing impaired
  • Dispute Resolution
  • Demonstrating the value of Visitor Information Centres to local councils
  • Customer Service Training
  • A review of Visitor Information Centre Development using the proposed new Lorne VIC as a case study
  • Networking through a 'creative' recreational activity

A workshop was also facilitated by Tourism Alliance whereby delegates could raise specific issues that they would like discussed or were after guidance about. This workshop proved very successful and several action points were developed which will take place in the coming months.

A familiarisation tour followed the two-day summit featuring major attractions within the Great Ocean Road region including Erskin Falls, Cape Otway Lightstation, The Otway Fly, 12 Apostles and the Sound and Light show in Warrnambool.

Sam Hicks from Marysville Tourism and Christine Legg from Prom Country Visitor Information Centre were the lucky winners of a Full Conference Registration to the See Australia Regional Tourism Convention worth $825 each. This prize was proudly donated by Tourism Alliance Victoria Ltd and the winners were announced at the Summit. Sam and Christine were placed into a draw with selected others to receive this valuable opportunity due to their dedication, initiative and awareness of how important Professional Development and Networking is to the Tourism Industry.

The next Professional Development Seminar will take place October 21st & 22nd. For further details please contact Reneé Ashcroft, Industry Development Coordinator on (03) 9650 8399 or email rashcroft@.com.au
