| Latest News and Information Tourism Alliance chipped in to make last week’s Colac Otway Business Week a great success. Two workshops aimed at existing and potential tourism businesses were run by Tourism Alliance as part of the State Government funded, Tourism Alliance managed, Otway Hinterland Capacity Building Project. Hold the Front Page! in Apollo Bay, was focused on grabbing the media’s attention. Tourism Victoria’s Public Relations Manager Laura Cavallo, participated in the session and provided practical advice on how to create a winning story idea, how to pitch your business to the mainstream and travel media and how to write a dynamic media release. A Media Release and Product Update Template developed by Tourism Alliance in conjunction with the Colac Otway Shire was officially launched at the workshop. Click here for copies of the templates. The media release template provides tips on how to develop an effective media release. The purpose of the product update template is to alert appropriate industry contacts, including Tourism Victoria, local council and Regional Tourism Organisations of any relevant changes to a tourism product or service, or any upcoming events. Media Release Template >> Product Update Template >> A Starting up in Tourism workshop, usually only delivered in Melbourne, was run in Colac to assist locals planning to capitalize on new nature based and accommodation opportunities in the expanded Great Otways National Park and along the Beechy Line Rail Trail. The workshop provided a step-by-step guide to planning and starting a new business. These workshops are part of a range of initiatives taking place through the three year Otway Hinterland Capacity Building Project, focused on strengthening the foundations of existing tourism organisations and businesses and stimulating further economic development in the region. Media Release >> Starting Up In Tourism Workshop Media Release >> Business to Business Familiarisations Tourism Alliance Victoria through the Department of Sustainability & Environment funded Otway Hinterland Capacity Building Project is coordinating ‘Business to Business’ Familiarisations (Famils) of created tourism product within the Otway Hinterland region. These Famils form part of the steps towards tourism success in the Otway Hinterland region. The Famils will include visits to accommodation, cafes/restaurants, cellar doors, created attractions, tour operations as well as other tourism product. Otway Coast Business Famil - 'Discover Your Wild Side' The second of three ‘Business to Business’ Famils was held on Tuesday 9th May 2006 and included visits to accommodation, hotels and teahouses located at Wongarra, Wye River, Kennett River and Separation Creek. Otway Coast Famil Itinerary >> Tim Page-Walker, General Manager of Bellarine Bayside and Chairman of Bellarine Peninsula Tourism was the guest speaker over the lunch break. He advised the 20 tourism business owners in attendance of the benefits of packaging with other like-minded tourism businesses. Mr Page-Walker provided examples of how Bellarine Peninsula operators have worked together to promote their region and individual businesses at caravan and camping shows, in travel publications and on programs such as Coxy’s Big Break and Post Cards. Handout from the day >> Otway Hinterland Business Famil The first 'Business to Business' Famil was held on Tuesday 6th December 2005 and included the townships of Colac, Forrest, Gellibrand and Beech Forest. One of the highlights from the day included a presentation from Peter Janssen, Operations Manager Familiarisations, Tourism Victoria, on the 'Art of Hosting Media & Travel Famils' and the importance of familiarisation exercises being an essential component of a tourism operators marketing budget. The third Famil will follow in mid/late 2006 and will focus on the Lavers Hill, Johanna and Cape Otway region. Action-Packed Tourism Workshop
Designed for new and existing business people who are moving into tour guiding and adventure tourism, the workshop provided a step-by-step guide to planning and starting a new business including horseback trail riding, bushwalking and mountain biking. The four hour Action-Packed Tourism workshop was led by Tourism Alliance Victoria’s Matthew Rechner and also included presentations from the Colac Otway Shire, OAMPS Insurance Brokers, the Department of Sustainability & Environment and Parks Victoria. The workshop was tailored specifically for potential adventure and nature-based start-ups within the Otways region.
