Young Tourism Professionals Launch Network
A network of young tourism professionals was officially launched by The Hon. John Pandazopoulos, Minister for Tourism on Tuesday 29th August at the BLVD Bar on Southbank.
Over 120 key tourism leaders and young tourism professionals from across the tourism industry, including representatives from universities, industry associations, state government and tourism and hospitality businesses, lent support to the network by attending the launch.
“This initiative is designed to encourage professional development, networking and to promote career opportunities amongst young tourism professionals and students,” Mr Pandazopoulos said in his opening comments.
Minister Pandazopoulos also announced State Government funding of $2000 of initial sponsorship to kickstart the Young Tourism Network and said the formation of the group was consistent with the statewide Tourism Excellence program, launched earlier this year.
The Young Tourism Network was formed in June this year, by a group of tourism industry employees and students, with direct industry support from Tourism Alliance Victoria, and with the long term goal of providing members with professional development and networking opportunities.
Lucy Hooper, Chair of the Young Tourism Network, said herself and the other 9 inaugural committee members have several things in common.
“We are concerned with professionalism and excellence of the tourism industry; we are interested in expanding our network of contacts and enhancing our career development opportunities; and we often feel detached from the wider industry due to our age or inexperience.”
“The network provides us and our members with a collective voice and a level of support that does not currently exist.” Ms Hooper said.
The Young Tourism Network is open to young tourism industry employees; new entrants to the tourism industry (from another career area, after time away from the industry or as a graduate/new employee); and final year students of a Tourism or Hospitality related degree, diploma or certificate course.
Individual membership is $70 for a two year period. Group membership for organisations wishing to support their young employees is also available.
For the purpose of the Young Tourism Network, the Tourism Industry encompasses all tourism related fields such as travel, leisure, hospitality, marketing, events, attractions, tour operations and tourism business operators.
