Election 2006 – Achieving Tourism’s Growth potential

Tourism Alliance urges all members to write to your local member and candidates seeking election asking their position with respect to tourism in the lead up to the State election.

Tourism Alliance has prepared a position paper which builds on issues carried to government over the past two years and to ensure the importance of the tourism industry is not overlooked.

On 19th October Tourism Alliance’s State Election position paper on tourism was provided to the leaders of each of the Parties, as well as the incumbent independents, contesting the Victorian State Election on November 25.  The document has also been sent to all MPs where tourism is significant to the electorate.

This position paper highlights 15 areas of focus and identifies 31 areas where action will support Victoria’s tourism industry in achieving its growth potential.  Key areas include:

  • Increasing Victoria’s tourism marketing resources.
  • Supporting the State’s tourism export growth potential and international air access
  • Sustainable development of our natural resources including recreational water flows, public land licensing and high country experiences
  • Growing the business events market in regional Victoria
  • Minimising impediments to business growth

Members will be advised of responses as they are received.

The document has been developed through consultation across our state-wide membership base which includes attractions, accommodation, tour operators, adventure and nature based providers as well as regional tourism organisations and regional conference venues.

All members were invited to comment on the draft document which was placed on the member only website early in October.

The release of the Government’s 10 Year Tourism and Events Strategy was welcomed by the industry as it indicates that the Government is prepared to adopt a whole of government approach and consider tourism needs over for the long term.

To take tourism in Victoria to the next step requires dollars and tangible commitments to support tourism business activity in Victoria.

This section of the website will be updated regularly over the next few weeks as information is released.
